Brunholl uses WM Veto Power

For the first time, the 1st Amendment to the Constitution has been utilised. Yesterday, Brunholl invoked the 1st Amendment to repeal the Trade Conduct and Regulation Act.

In a regional first, Worshipful Master Brunholl has invoked the 1st Amendment to the Constitution in order to repeal the Trade Conduct and Regulation Act on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.

The 1st Amendment, which was legislated by Meercovo last month, gives the Worshipful Master the power to veto or repeal one law within their term. The amendment was not intended to ever have to be used but recent events have led to its use.

On Tuesday, Judge of the Opposition, Meercovo, released their support for former WM candidate Patec's policy to repeal the trade conduct and regulation act.

The act, which was the first piece of legislation to be passed in TOO, had concerns raised by Meercovo over its constitutional status. ONN explored why:

  1. The constitution states that '(7.6,3) TOO shall have a Common Market, allowing all nations to engage in frictionless trade, only according to their own laws'. The Trade Act prevented this from happening as it regulated trade and placed checks on goods to meet standards. This was believed to prevent frictionless trade.

  2. ' (7.6,4) Any regulations on trade must be approved by the entire region'. As the act was 5 months old, and much had changed, Meercovo questioned if the act now had the approval of the entire region.

Upon these discoveries, WM Brunholl declared their outrage that this breech of the constitution had gone unnoticed, and ordered a poll on repealing the act to be created immediately:

"As WM this clear breach of the constitution is alarming. I am calling on the speaker to immediately call a poll on this issue so the region can vote on wether to repeal."

It was at this point that Brunholl was reminded of the 1st Amendment, as nations became distressed that further trade disruption was occurring.

The repealing of this act marks an important step in regional politics. For the first time, a law approved democratically by the region (in a poll which resulted in 100% support) has been removed without regional consent.

It is only the second time in history that any act has ever been repealed, the first being the original constitution.

Brunholl has utilised the maximum power as WM- to overturn legislation without regional consent. While some would call this undemocratic, the government believes it acted quickly and efficiently to prevent any damage to its reputation.

Today, questions remained unanswered as to how this went undetected for so long. A source in Meercovo stated:

"This act was passed before the constitution, meaning that when it was written and passed, it was not unconstitutional. However, the approval of the new constitution almost 2 months ago means it is now illegal. We will be looking over any other legislation passed before the current constitution to ensure no other errors go unaccounted for."

In this embarrassing slip up for the Opposition, the Government has shown that it is prepared to use ruthless and sometimes controversial methods to bring things back into line.
