Government formed in Meercovo, and Republic declared by new PM

In a shocking political twist, the Communists have successfully formed a government with the Social Democrats and Republicans, and won a confidence vote 403-297 with the support of the Liberals.

The new flag of the Republic

Yesterday morning, the Communists successfully formed a government after reaching a coalition agreement and winning a confidence vote. Tensions have settled although many in Meercovo have made clear that they will not support the new government and will actively try and undermine it.

Oleg Edwards left the Prime Ministerial residence, tendering his resignation to the King via video link, as the King remains in an undisclosed location. Meanwhile, Communist leader Nicholas Lemieux, visited the King in person and was invited to form a government.

Ironically, his first act as PM was to introduce a bill to Parliament proclaiming Meercovo to be a republic yesterday afternoon. The bill narrowly passed, 351-348, with 1 abstention. Lemieux then summoned the King to the Parliament Buildings, and the bill was signed into law.

Meercovians this morning woke up to the news that their country was now a republic, and that the King had fled abroad.

This news has not yet been met with violence or clear opposition, although around 7.5% of the population is a member of the Monarchist League, an organisation dedicated to the preservation of the monarchy, who are said to be furious that the law was implemented without a referendum.

The new law was published in news outlets this morning, and it read:

A new republican standard was raised at the parliament building, and a new coat of arms issued replacing the crown and the King's initials as the Great Seal of Meercovo.

The new Republic of Meercovo, or Respublica Meercovo in Meercovian, was proclaimed outside the Parliament buildings by Lemieux, the leader of the Social Democrats, Anthony Hammal, and the leader of the Republicans, Rowena Rigby.

Whatever happens over the next weeks and months, it is clear that this Communist-led government intends to be revolutionary and rapid in its implementation of change, something which 18.6 million Conservative voters will have to adjust to very quickly.
